About

Stance, formation, and trajectory

Simon Lightman

I approach education as an ethical and relational practice concerned with formation. I am interested in how learners and institutions come to be who they are, and in how education shapes ways of relating to others, to knowledge, and to the more than human world.

Across my work, I explore how dominant educational models have prioritised autonomy, mastery, and optimisation, often at the expense of interdependence, care, and responsibility. I am particularly interested in the distinction between egoic forms of subjectivity and what I describe as the ecosystemic learner, a figure oriented toward attentiveness, relationality, and ethical responsiveness.

I work at the boundary between philosophy and practice, in sustained engagement with institutions, drawing on educational research, phenomenology, critical pedagogy, and relational ontologies. My writing and practice engage questions of curriculum purpose, sustainability leadership, youth agency, and ethical futures, with a focus on how institutions create the conditions for new ways of seeing, acting, and imagining.

My professional life spans secondary education, sustainability and global citizenship education, youth governance, and system level collaboration. Throughout this work, I am drawn to contexts that value intellectual honesty, dialogue, and long horizon thinking, and that are willing to remain with complexity rather than retreat into simplification.
